Many people passed lightly through Leadville, yet even a brief experience there could have lasting impact. Samuel Gross was an Hungarian emigrant, born in 1868 or 1869, who lived in Leadville for a short sojourn beginning about 1887.

He worked at the May store there and blossomed as a long time employee of the Company becoming manager of its Cleveland department store. He married in Ohio in 1894 and died there in 1964.
